Pat and Bill Maxwell are both natives of Memphis, Tennessee. They grew up down the street from each other, attended Central High School and Speedway Baptist Church together, and have been married for 41 years. They have three children and six grandchildren and live in Germantown, Tennessee. They began dancing only nine years ago, starting as beginners at the Germantown Community Centre. From lessons one day a week they rapidly accelerated to three lessons a week. The hook was set and after only three years they agreed to begin teaching beginners even as they continued their own lessons. As a team they work well together, with Bill doing the teaching and keeping the class moving and Pat supplementing with a woman's insights and emphasizing the woman's special needs. They have taught at the Germantown Community Centre for the last five years and also, from time to time, have taught at local churches and even at a
retirement home. Their students have ranged in age from 10 years old to over 80 years old. No one is too young or too old to enjoy wonderful music, fine
fellowship and the excellent exercise found in ballroom dancing! Social ballroom dancing is what they teach, what they dance and what they recommend for all beginning students. The classes begin with the basics and then, as the basic steps are perfected, combinations of basic steps and more complicated steps are added. They believe a good foundation is essential for the confidence of the dancer and for the fullest enjoyment of the dance itself. If you learn ten steps but can't remember them or do them well, you haven't gained much in skill or confidence and you won't be inclined to get out on the floor and dance. It's Pat and Bill's desire that their students learn the basics well and begin to build on a firm foundation with confidence. Actually using on the dance floor what one learns in the classroom is the best method of improvement they have found.
Pat and Bill taught for seven days on the Mississippi Queen steamboat this past March and have again been asked to teach ballroom dance lessons by the Delta Queen Steamboat Co. on their boats this summer. They will be teaching on the American Queen in July and the Mississippi Queen in September and are excited about being on the river again for these Big Band Cruises.
